This will be an annual open International competition.
GPS and Gap scoring will be incorporated so HPAC points will be available based on a valid competition.
The race during Lumby Days will be a maximum of 20 km per circuit around 3 to 5 thermal generating mountains and turn points near the town of Lumby. The gliders will be visible to the Lumby Days crowd, media and spectators at all times. Landings will be at The Lumby AirPark two km north of town by the Mabel Lake road on Randy's farm.
The race will be a simple yet challenging format:
Launch window will open at Coopers Launch or Saddle Mountain early and pilots will race a fixed number of circuits around the course.
Fastest times to complete per class will win the day and most consistent will win the race.
The Lumby Valley's have some of the best terrain and conditions for racing around a course rather than just racing down wind. It will require an extra level of pilot proficiency to win this race.
There will also be an annual open invitation 100 km and possibly a 50km triangle race, all season long from April to September, launching from Coopers, with hopes of breaking the world records for both Hang Gliding and Paragliding.
Cash prizes will be announced soon for any official record breaks. The week before and after the Lumby Air Races will be a perfect time of the year to break the world records.
The Lumby Valley and area is great for Hang Gliding and Paragliding because of the friendly people and normally light winds, semi arid climate, numerous safe launches and of course the Great Thermal Lift and high cloud base!
The Canadian National Hang Gliding and Paragliding Championships have been hosted from Lumby for the past four consecutive years producing four valid events.
The Lumby Air Force started flying in Lumby in 1975 and was registered as a non profit society in 1976 when they hosted their first Hang Gliding competition during Lumby Days in that year. Since then, many National, Provincial and Regional competitions have been successfully hosted in Lumby.
This year we will celebrate 30 years of flying competitions in Lumby and "The Lumby Air Races "will be the theme for this years Lumby Days.
Self contained camping at The Lumby Air Park includes high speed wireless Internet, charging power bars, glider storage, sauna and shower for $10.00/night
